The CLRC Latin program offers 4 years of Latin. In the fourth year of the program students will read extracts from Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Vergil, Livy, and Ovid. CLRC Latin classes consist of two 1-hour class meetings each week.
The CLRC uses the Oxford Latin Course – a series commonly used in both high schools and colleges in the United States. The OLC offers a good mixture of both inductive and deductive learning. It includes a clear and systematic presentation of grammar with the regular use of extended readings so students can begin to absorb the patterns of a new language. The narrative passages detail the life of the Roman poet Horace and help students to develop an understanding of a critical point in the history of Rome – the transition from the Republic to the Empire during the times of Cicero and Augustus. The instructor will supplement the text with songs, chants, games, online activities and drills.
For Academic Year 2009-2010 the CLRC will offer the following Latin Classes:
Latin I: Introduction to Latin
Latin I is designed for students with little or no previous experience with Latin. The course runs for two semesters and covers the Oxford Latin Course Part I. Latin 1A (the first semester of the class) covers the first 8 chapters of the text. Latin 1B (the second semester) covers chapters 9-16. Students with some Latin background may be able to begin the class at the second semester level (Latin 1B). If you are interested in this possibility please contact us to take an online placement quiz. Latin I is open to students from Grade 7 to adult or with permission of the instructor. Students should purchase "The Oxford Latin Course Part I - 2nd Edition".
Latin II: Intermediate Latin
Latin II is designed for students with some previous knowledge of Latin. Specifically, students beginning Latin II should be familiar with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension nouns and adjectives; personal, demonstrative, and relative pronouns; and all 4 verb conjugations. Students who are unsure of the best class choice should contact us to take a online placement quiz. Latin II is open to students from Grade 7 to adult or with permission of the instructor. Students should purchase "The Oxford Latin Course Part II - 2nd Edition".
Advanced Latin
The CLRC also offers advanced Latin classes and private and semi-private tutoring options. Meeting times and frequency of classes are adapted to the needs of the students. We recommend meeting at least once a week and not more than three times a week. Groups of students can choose a time that is convenient for semi-private and small group classes and sign up together. If there is a parent, grandparent, or another adult who will be working alongside the student at home (this is not necessary) they are welcome to attend class for free.
If you are interested in one of these options but are not able to gather a group of your own let us know. We will work to find a suitable small group for your student to join. For rates on these classes please see our tuition page.
Latin Consulting Seminar for Parents teaching Latin:
In addition to our online Latin classes for students the CLRC offers a class for parents who are teaching or wish to teach their younger children Latin at home. The seminar consists of a weekly one hour question and answer session with Anne Van Fossen. Topics to be addressed include: Choice of curriculum, aids to help students understand problem areas, ideas for games and songs to make Latin fun for young children, clarification of problem areas for parents and other topics that come up throughout the year. Anne has many years of experience teaching Latin to children as young as 5 years old. Although very young children cannot comprehend sophisticated grammar their natural ability and enthusiasm for memory work make this a great time to introduce them to Latin vocabulary, many of the basic verb and noun paradigms, and some of the patterns of the Latin language . It is often possible for students who have worked on Latin at home to begin with a Latin II class by the time they are old enough for online classes. The seminar is available on a month-to-month basis for $25/month.
National Latin Exam: All CLRC students have the option of taking the National Latin Exam in the Spring semester.
Instructor:
Anne Van Fossen has a master’s degree in Classics and has 8 years of experience teaching classical languages. She loves Greek and Latin and enjoys few things more than helping others to learn and love them too.
Course Requirements:
Students should expect to work 30 - 45 minutes a day in addition to class time.
