"I am incredibly grateful to have chosen CLRC for Latin. I am certain I could not have achieved the high level of instruction my daughter has experienced through CLRC on my own." --- Barbara S., IdahoCLRC offers 4 years of middle school and high school Latin. Students are not required to complete the entire 4 year sequence. The first three years cover the full Latin grammar. In the fourth year of the program students read extracts from Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Vergil, Livy, and Ovid. Additional reading classes are available after year 4 for those who wish to continue their Latin reading or prepare for AP testing for the SAT subject test in Latin. Throughout the four-year program emphasis is placed on the development of English vocabulary (and ‘SAT words’) through the use of Latin derivatives. CLRC middle school and high school Latin classes meet once a week for two hours with optional office hours each week for help with homework or review.
The CLRC uses the Oxford Latin Course – a series commonly used in both high schools and colleges in the United States. The OLC offers a good mixture of both inductive and deductive learning. It includes a clear and systematic presentation of grammar with the regular use of extended readings so students can begin to absorb the patterns of a new language. The narrative passages detail the life of the Roman poet Horace and help students to develop an understanding of a critical point in the history of Rome – the transition from the Republic to the Principate during the times of Cicero and Augustus. The instructor supplements the text with songs, chants, games, online activities and drills. Click here to view the textbooks.
All CLRC students have the option of taking the National Latin Exam in the Spring semester.
Anne Van Fossen has a master’s degree in Classics and has 10 years of experience teaching classical languages to all ages. She loves Greek and Latin and enjoys few things more than helping others to learn and love them too.

In this first year of Latin 4 Kids students are introduced to 5 of the 8 parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions), transitive and intransitive verbs, linking verbs, the present, imperfect, and future tense, direct object, indirect object, and possessive nouns. They learn the first declension for nouns and the first conjugation for verbs. They learn to use all 5 of the Latin cases and learn all 4 principal parts of their verbs. And on top of all that, they have fun doing it!
Parents should purchase "Matin Latin Book 1". The flashcards and worksheet package that accompany the text are also recommended.
Students in year two of Latin 4 Kids learn the remaining parts of speech (adverbs, conjunctions, and interjections) and begin sentence diagramming. They learn more uses for the 5 Latin cases, the second and third declension for nouns, and the second and third conjugation for verbs. In addition to the present system for verbs (present, imperfect and future tenses) they learn the perfect system (perfect, pluperfect and future perfect tenses) as well – and they still have fun!
Parents should purchase "Matin Latin Book 2". The flashcards and worksheet package that accompany the text are also recommended.
Students who have completed Latin 4 Kids Year Two are prepared to begin work on the full Latin grammar. Some students are ready to join a middle school level CLRC Latin class. For others it is better to continue in a special advanced Latin class for elementary school children that covers the same material at a slower pace. The instructor and parents work together to determine the best next steps in Latin for each individual student.
