CLRC offers two distinct tracks for Latin: our five-year track for middle school through adult, and Latin4Kids for elementary school students.

Latin I, II, III, IV, and V

Middle School, High School, and Adults

Latin-BarbaraS-IdahoCLRC offers 4 years of middle school and high school Latin. Students are not required to complete the entire 4 year sequence.  The first three years cover the full Latin grammar. In the fourth year of the program students read extracts from Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Vergil, Livy, and Ovid. Additional reading classes are available after year 4 for those who wish to continue their Latin reading or prepare for AP testing or the SAT subject test in Latin. Throughout the four-year program emphasis is placed on the development of English vocabulary (and ‘SAT words’) through the use of Latin derivatives. CLRC middle school and high school Latin classes meet once a week for two hours with optional office hours each week for help with homework or review.

Texts:

The CLRC uses the Oxford Latin Course – a series commonly used in both high schools and colleges in the United States. The OLC offers a good mixture of both inductive and deductive learning. It includes a clear and systematic presentation of grammar with the regular use of extended readings so students can begin to absorb the patterns of a new language. The narrative passages detail the life of the Roman poet Horace and help students to develop an understanding of a critical point in the history of Rome – the transition from the Republic to the Principate during the times of Cicero and Augustus. The instructor supplements the text with songs, chants, games, online activities and drills. National Latin Exam:

All CLRC students have the option of taking the National Latin Exam in the Spring semester.

Anne Van Fossen, CLRC Latin Program Director
