 Students learn grammar

  •  Learning grammar is an essential part and an important benefit of learning Latin.
  •  We explain grammar lessons clearly in English, with plenty of examples, and then apply that understanding to Latin.
  •  We have developed an extensive system of clear, eye appealing charts to outline key grammatical concepts.
  •  Students as young as 6 years old learn about subjects, verbs, subject complements,
direct objects, indirect objects, prepositional phrases and much more.

Students learn Latin vocabulary

Younger students are guided through the process of developing their own flash card system with color-coded cards, personal illustrations, and neatly hand written definitions.

For older students we provide complete sets of online flashcards.  Our cards include all 4 principal parts of each Latin verb and can be used not only as flashcards (either online or printed as physical cards) but also in a variety of games and self-testing options.

Regular vocabulary quizzes help students focus on vocabulary building.

Students learn English vocabulary too!

  •  Every homework assignment includes derivative work – finding English words that are based on the new Latin vocabulary they are learning that week.
  •  Students broaden their English vocabulary while solidifying their understanding of the new Latin words they are learning.
  •  Etymology is fascinating!  Do you know what plenipotentiary means?

029We incorporate regular review

  • Every class includes review of previous vocabulary and grammar lessons.
  • Daily homework assignments include both oral and written practice of all the verb conjugations and noun declensions learned.
  • At the middle school and high school level we provide cumulative exams after every 7 or 8 lessons.  These test vocabulary retention, understanding of grammatical concepts, and sight-reading ability.  These exams provide us with a helpful diagnostic tool and an objective-grading standard for parents who want grade reports for their home school file.

We answer student questions

  • CLRC Latin teachers love Latin!  We are passionate about helping others to love it too.
  • Students can ‘raise their hand’ in our virtual classroom anytime to ask for help or clarification.
  • We are also available on the class forum and via email to answer questions between classes and when necessary private appointments can be made as well.

We provide a complete Latin program for K-12

  • CLRC offers a comprehensive series of 9 Latin courses for students from 6 years old up to a second year college reading level.
  • Our Latin4Kids program flows directly into the middle and high school level classes with no need re-start in a different program
  • The program includes three distinct entry points to accommodate students of different ages, abilities, and motivation.
  • At the middle and high school level we use a standard textbook, The Oxford Latin Course, commonly used in both high schools and colleges in the United States and Britain

Students learn to read Latin100 0414

  • There are many side-benefits to learning Latin – vocabulary, discipline, training in systematic and precise thought, logic, ease of learning subsequent languages, raising SAT scores
  • But, the ultimate goal of Latin study is to be able to read the world’s great literature that was written in Latin – Virgil, Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Livy, Ovid …
  • We begin reading with our youngest students so they get used to the pattern and cadence of the language as early as possible
  • This early familiarity eases the eventual transition to reading authentic Latin authors

We have fun!

  • Younger students sing songs, learn rhymes, and draw pictures while learning as much Latin as many first year high school students
  • “Naumachia” (like the Battleship board game) is a marvelous way to teach students about adjective noun agreement.  If they don’t get the correct form of the needed adjective their shot is an automatic miss.
  • Older students have friendly competitions with the online flash cards – complete with prizes mailed to the top scorers
  • And then there’s the Caesar game – a rapid paced game where students climb the ‘Cursus Honorum’ of public offices in Rome if they correctly identify the case and use of case for nouns and adjectives; the mood and tense for verbs.  Those who rise to the level of Caesar are awarded with a special prize
  • We have fun mastering difficult grammatical concepts together, sharing news about the events of the week, and figuring out why on earth Caesar nested that subordinate clause within another subordinate clause, within a third one!

NLE Gold Medal
We prepare students for the National Latin Exam

CLRC students are encouraged to take the National Latin Exam.

From January to March all students work on sample NLE questions as part of their weekly homework assignment.

Each class has a special forum where they can ask their teacher for help on any NLE related questions.

Many CLRC students have achieved perfect papers and gold and silver medals!

Latin-BarbaraS-Idaho CLRC offers up to 5 years of middle school and high school Latin.  The first three years cover the full Latin grammar. In the fourth year of the program students read extracts from Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Vergil, Livy, and Ovid. Additional reading classes are available after year 4 for those who wish to continue their Latin reading or prepare for AP testing or the SAT subject test in Latin. Throughout the five-year program emphasis is placed on the development of English vocabulary (and ‘SAT words’) through the use of Latin derivatives. CLRC middle school and high school Latin classes meet once a week for two hours with optional office hours each week for help with homework or review.

Texts:

The CLRC uses the Oxford Latin Course – a series commonly used in both high schools and colleges in the United States. The OLC offers a good mixture of both inductive and deductive learning. It includes a clear and systematic presentation of grammar with the regular use of extended readings so students can begin to absorb the patterns of a new language. The narrative passages detail the life of the Roman poet Horace and help students to develop an understanding of a critical point in the history of Rome – the transition from the Republic to the Principate during the times of Cicero and Augustus. The instructor supplements the text with songs, chants, games, online activities and drills. Click here to view the textbooks.

National Latin Exam:

All CLRC students have the option of taking the National Latin Exam in the Spring semester.
