The CLRC Greek program uses the Oxford University Press text Athenaze, which is the companion volume to the Oxford Latin Course (see Latin course description). Like the OLC, the Athenaze series is commonly used in both high schools and colleges in the United States and offers a good mixture of both inductive and deductive learning. Grammar is presented systematically in the context of a reading-based approach. Students will read short passages from both Classical and New Testament Greek in virtually every chapter. The text will be supplemented with a variety of activities to aid in memorization. The CLRC offers 4 years of Greek. There is some flexibility regarding the pace of the course dependent upon the background of the students enrolled. Students with previous experience in Latin or another inflected language can generally move through the material more quickly than those beginning an inflected language for this first time. We work to help our students move forward at a pace that is rigorous but not overwhelming. Students will move through the two volumes of Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek over a period of two to four years. Classes that move through the grammar in a period of 2 years have the option to continue with 2 more years of reading Greek texts to apply the grammar and vocabulary they have learned to genuine and lengthy Greek texts. After completion of the first volume of Athenaze students will have reasonable facility with the Greek of the New Testament. For Academic Year 2010-2011 the CLRC offers the following Classical Greek Classes: Greek I: Introduction to Classical Greek Greek I is designed for students with little or no previous experience with Greek. The course runs for two semesters. Students with some Greek background may be able to begin the class at the second semester level (Greek 1B). If you are interested in this possibility please contact us to take an online placement quiz. Greek I is open to students from Grade 7 to adult or with permission of the instructor. Students should purchase "Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek Book I Second Edition". The class is appropriate for students who wish to learn either Ancient or Biblical Greek. Greek II: Intermediate Classical Greek Greek II is designed for students with some previous knowledge of Greek. Students who are unsure of the best class choice should contact us to take an online placement quiz. Greek II is open to students from Grade 7 to adult or with permission of the instructor. This year Greek II will cover the second half of "Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek Book I Second Edition". Small Group Classes and Private Tutoring If you have a small group of people who are interested in learning Greek or improving their Greek together contact us. We can make special arrangements for a group of people who would like to study with us. You don't even have to live in the same place. We also offer private tutoring for all levels from Beginning Greek to intermediate reading. Instructor: Anne Van Fossen has a master’s degree in Classics and has 9 years of experience teaching classical languages to all ages from Kindergarten through High School and adults. She loves Greek and Latin and enjoys few things more than helping others to learn and love them too. Course Requirements: Students should expect to work 30-45 minutes a day in addition to class time. Textbooks: Students should purchase both the textbook "Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek Second Edition" and the accompanying workbook.
